(Lat.) As if. Towns. PI. 23, 27. There words frequently occur in old English statutes. Lord Bacon expounds their meaning in the statute of uses: “The statute gives entry, not simpliciter, but with an ac si.” Bac. Read. Uses, Works, iv. 195.

The definition of Ac si in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:

“As if,” a term appearing in old statutes, e.g., the Statute of Uses, having the same effect as “shall be deemed,” i.e., to assert that while X is not Y it shall nonetheless be treated as if it were.
