The definition of Absent in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:
As an adjective, means “away” or “not present.” In some contexts, it can imply nonexistence, e.g., “There is absent any motive for murder.” Used as a verb, e.g., “He absented himself from the trial,” the word indicates an intentional act. See also absent from [or out of] the state.
