Saund. 207, note 2; 2 Wm. Saund. 24, 330; Brooke, Abr. “Abridgment;” 1 Pet. (U.S.) 74; Stearns, Real Actions, 204. To abridge damage is to reduce the same after the rendition of the verdict.

What does Abridge mean in American Law?

The definition of Abridge in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:

To cut down, shorten. As a process carried out on written works, this is often accomplished merely by the selective elimination of portions of the work being abridged. Thus, for instance, it is proper to speak of one “abridging” his pleading. But frequently the process of condensation requires actual rewriting to decrease the bulk while preserving the basic content of the work. See also abridgment. “Abridge” can also refer to a process applied to things other than writings, e.g., liberties may be said to be “abridged” when they are limited by governmental action, and a reduction of awarded damages by subsequent order of a court is sometimes called “abridgment of damages.” In copyright law, the position was once taken that an abridged version of a work was not an infringement of its copyright, but that has not been the law since the nineteenth century.
