The definition of Abolish in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:

To eliminate, end, destroy utterly, and, by usual implication, to do so permanently. An office may be abolished (“The court of common pleas is hereby abolished,”) as can a longstanding, deeprooted institution (e.g., slavery).
