Meaning of Vice

A defect, a fault. Also, one who is nest to a superior office as in the term vice- president, vice-chancellor.

Vice Alternative Definition

(Lat.; ablative of vicis, place). In the place or stead. Vice mea, in my place. Used in the composition of words denoting a delegated or depnted authority. A term used in the civil law and in Louisiana, by which is meant a defect in a thing; an imperfection. For example, epilepsy in a slave, roaring and crib biting in a horse, are vices. Rfedhibitory vices are those for which the seller will be compelled to annul a sale and take back the thing sold. Poth. Vente, 203; Civ. Code La. arts. 2498-2507.

Concept of “Vice”

Traditional meaning of vice in English (with some legal use of this latin concept in England and the United States in the XIX Century) [1]: (in Latin) In place of; a defect. Vice-Chancellor: there are three Vice- Chancellors in England, each holding a court, from which an appeal might be taken to the Chancellor; see the entry on types of courts, 17. Vicecomes (viscount): the sheriff. Vicecomes non misit breve: the sheriff hath not sent the writ; see CONTINUANCE. Vice versa: in inverse manner; in the opposite order.
