Traditional meaning of vadium in English (with some legal use of this latin concept in England and the United States in the XIX Century) [1]: (in Latin) A pledge; security; surety. Vadium mortuum: a dead pledge, or mortgage; see 2nd Book (“The Rights of Things”), Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Laws of England 157. Vadium vivum: a vifgage, a pledge of property to hold until the profits or interests paid off the debt; see Robinson’s Elementary Law Rev. ed.; § 92.
