Meaning of Trade Secret

Any formula, patent , devise , plan, process , tool, mechanism or compound known only to its owner and those of its employees to whom it is necessary to confide same, and which gives the owner an opportunity to obtain an advantage over competitors who do not know or use same. In this context, the term implies at least minimal novelty of the formula, patent, devise, etc., for that which does not possess novelty is usually known. See Kewanee Oil Co. v Bicron Corp., 416 U.S. 470, 94 S.Ct. 1879, 40 L.Ed.2d 315.
