Meaning of Tally, Talley

An ancient form of keeping accounts between a debtor and a creditor . A stick, rectangular in shape, was used for this purpose; notches were cut along one side of the stick. This stick was then split lengthwise so that one-half of the notches are shown on each part so split, the debtor retaining one part and the creditor the other .
