Legal Definition and Related Resources of Stock

A fund, capital ; the money or goods employed in trade ; the property which a merchant , a tradesman or a company has invested in any business , including merchandise , money and credit ; more particularly the goods which the merchant or a commercial house keeps on hand for the supply of customers. In relation to corporations, the capital or principal fund of the same, and in modern times is synonymous with its share or share capital. Race, lineage or family .

The amount of money or property subscribed and paid in, or agreed to be paid in, by the shareholders. It is ordinarily divided into equal shares of a determined value, and apportioned among the stockholders in proportion to the amount which they have paid in, or for which they are liable. Distinction has been made between the capital stock, which is an asset of the corporation, and the shares of stock, which are the property of the several shareholders. 34 Eng. & Am. Corp. Cas. 223.

Ownership of a corporation which is represented by shares which represent a piece of the corporation’s assets and earnings.
