Meaning of Revenue
return , profit , yield of land or other funds; income . The term is generally used to refer to income of a government . In this sense it means all the public money the government of a nation , state or municipality collects from whatever source for the payment of its expenses. It is the annual or periodical yield of taxes, excise, custom dues, or rents, etc. which a government receives into treasury for public use; public income of whatever kind. early 15c., “income from property or possessions,” from Middle French revenue, in Old French, “a return,” noun use of femenine past participle of revenir “come back” (10c.), from Latin revenire “return, come back,” from re- “back” (see re-) + venire “to come,” from a suffixed form of PIE root *gwa- “to go, come.” Meaning “public income” is first recorded 1680s; revenue sharing popularized from 1971. Revenuer “U.S. Department of Revenue agent,” the bane of Appalachian moonshiners, first attested 1880.
