Meaning of Recognisance, Recognizance

A bond of record testifying the recognisor to owe a certain sum of money to another; such an obligation undertaken before some court of record or magistrate duly authorized. The object of a recognisance is to secure the performance of some act by the cognisor . In criminal law, a person found guilty of an offense may be required, as a condition of his discharge , to enter into a recognisance to keep the peace and be of good behavior and to observe and perform the other terms of the discharge.
