Meaning of Real Estate

The primary meaning of the term is land and tenements, and corporeal as well as certain incorporeal hereditaments. However, the term has by statutes and judicial decisions acquired extended meaning. Thus, oil and gas lease has been held to be real estate . See U.S. v Texas Eastern transmission Corp., (D.C.La.)254 F.Supp. 114. The term also has been defined as an estate in fee or for life in land. See Reeve v van Gilder, (Mo.App.) 264 S. W.2d893. In the absence of statutory provision in that regard , a leasehold for a term of years , not being a freehold , is a real estate only for conveyance purposes but otherwise chattel real. See Krall v Light, 210 S. W. 739, 240 Mo.App. 480.
