(Lat.) In civil law. An uncle by the father's side; a father's brother. Dig. 38. 10, 10. Patruus magnus is a grandfather's brother, grand uncle. Patruus major is a great-grandfather's brother. Patrwus mnximus is a great-grandfather's father's brother.
