Meaning of Parent
The primary meaning of the term is a father or a mother. under the laws of some jurisdictions, the term would include an adoptive parent, even to the exclusion of the natural parent. See Betz v Horr, 276 N. Y. 83, 11 N.E.2d 548. The provisions of Statutes may extend the meaning of the term to include persons who are in loco parentis, one who has publicly acknowledged or treated the child as his own, in a manner to indicate his voluntary assumption of parenthood. See King v Smith, 392 U.S. 309, 20 L.Ed.2d 1118, 88 S.Ct. 2128.
