Meaning of Indigent

destitute of property or means of comfortable subsistence; needy, poor, in want. In the context of social welfare legislation the term has been interpreted as one who need not be absolutely destitute to enjoy benefit of the statutes, but as one who lacks property or means of comfortable subsistence and who for that reason is needy or in want. See for instance , state v Harris, 250 A.2d 719, 5 Conn. Cir. 313.
