Meaning of Estate For Life Or Life Estate

A person who is entitled to the use and enjoyment of property during his lifetime or during the life of another when it is called estate pur autre vie . An estate for life may also be determinable on the happening of an uncertain event such as the coming of age of the remainderman . See McArthur v Scott, 113 U.S. 340, 28 L.Ed. 1015, 5 S.Ct. 652. Unlike an estate for years , by reason of it being an estate for an indeterminate period , a life estate is a freehold . Also the possession of a life tenant is his own possession, whereas that for a tenant for years is that of the lessor . Rawson v Brown, 104 Ohio St. 537, 136 N.E. 209.
