Meaning of Eavesdropping

Relates to persons who listen to conversations of inhabitants in a house by loitering under windows or eaves. Eavesdroppers are such as listen under the walls or windows or eaves of houses to harken to discourse and thereupon proclaim slanderous and mischievous tales . 4 Bl. Comm. 168. Eavesdropping was an offense at common law and the accused was required in the discretion of the court to find sureties for their good behavior . However, in order to be indictable, the acts of the accused must have been habitual and combine the lurking about dwelling houses and other places where persons meet for private discourse secretly listening to what is said and then tattling it abroad. state v Davis, 51 S. E. 897, 139 N. C. 547.
