Meaning of Cruel
Disposed to inflict suffering, indifferent to, or taking pleasure in another’s pain. Merciless, pitiless, hardhearted; fierce, savage; severe, rigorous; painful, distressing. Disposed to inflict a high degree of pain with utter indifference to, or even enjoyment of suffering of others. As used in the eighth amendment to the federal constitution prohibiting cruel and unusual punishment , the term denotes punishment which inflicts unnecessary pain or cruelty , torture or lingering death . state Ex. Ril. Serna v Hodges, 552 P.2d 787, 89 N.M. 351. capital punishment has been held to be cruel within the constitutional prohibition of cruel or unusual punishment. See People v Anderson, 100 Cal. Rptr. 152, 493 P.2d 880.
