Description/ translation of conviction into Spanish: literalmente, culpabilidad (sea como consecuencia del reconocimiento del propio encausado (guilty plea) o como consecuencia de un veredicto (tras un juicio con intervención de jurado) o de una sentencia condenatoria (si procede de juez o tribunal); en general, sentencia (condenatoria); prior convictions: antecedentes penales, condenas anteriores; to vacate a conviction: revocar, dejar sin efecto un veredicto o sentencia condenatoria; unsafe conviction: sentencia condenatoria viciada (la dictada en infracción de algún derecho o garantía fundamental)[1]

English Legal System: Conviction

In the context of the English law, A Dictionary of Law provides the following legal concept of Conviction :

1. (for the purposes of the Bail Act 1976) In criminal proceedings, a finding of *guilty, or an acquittal on the ground of insanity. In a magistrates’ court, a finding that the accused carried out the act for which he was charged (See summary conviction).

2. (for the purposes of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974) Any finding (except one of insanity), either in criminal proceedings or in care proceedings, that a person has committed an offence or carried out the act for which he was charged.
