Meaning of C.o.d.

An abbreviation for cash on delivery . These letters signify the obligation of a carrier to the consignor to collect payment for goods from the consignee prior to delivery. Thus, delivery and payment are to occur at the same time. See Daughertv v Fowler, 44 Kan. 628, 25 P. 40. A c.o.d. tract is deemed to be a shipment contract and therefore the risk of the loss rests on the buyer after delivery to the carrier. See U.C.C. 509(l)(a).
