Meaning of Citation

A writ or other process issued out of a court of competent jurisdiction , commanding a person named to appear before a court in that action or proceeding .A designation of a point of law including the name of the case, the volume of the report or reports in which the case is contained, and the page on which the case begins. See for example the citations contained in the preceding definition.

(Lat, citare, to call, t6 summon). In Practice. A writ issued out of a court of competent jurisdiction, commanding a person therein named to appear on a day named, and do something therein mentioned, or show cause why he should not. Proctor, Prac. The act by which a person is so summoned or cited. It is applied particularly to process from probate and ecclesiastical courts, and to notices issued in special proceedings in some states. It is usually the original process in any proceeding, and is in that respect analogous to the writ of capias or summons at law, and the subpoena in chancery. In the ecclesiastical law, the citation is the beginning and foundation of the whole cause, and.is said to have six requisites, namely, the insertion of the name of the judge, of the promovert, of the impugnant, of the cause of suit, of the place, and of the time of appearance; to which may be added the affixing the seal of the court, and the name of the register or his deputy. 1 Brown, Civ. Law, 453, 454; 3 Bl. Coram. 100. In Scotch Practice. The calling of a party to an action done by an officer of the court under a proper warrant. The service of a writ or bill of summons. Paterson, Comp. Of Authorities. The production of or reference to the text of acts of legislatures, treatises, or cases of similar nature decided by the courts, in order to support propositions advanced.

Citation in the One-L Dictionary

A reference that identifies a particular case, law review article, book, statute or other resource. For example, the citation for Roe v. Wade is 410 U.S. 959 (1973). The case appears in volume 410 of the official United States Reports beginning on page 959. The opinion was issued in 1973. 42 U.S.C. _1983 is the citation for civil rights legislation.
