Meaning of Chance

A fortuitous event , an accident . Also, absence of skill or of explainable or controllable causation, as in game of chance. The opposite of intention , design or contrivance.

Chance Alternative Definition

Pure chance consists in the absence of all means of calculating results. Morris (Iowa) 169. It is to be distinguished from “accident,” which is “the unusual prevention of an effect naturally resulting from the means employed.” Id. Chance is always undeterminable; it neither forms nor designs; intention is never attributed to it; its events are uncertain. 59 111. 165.
