Certificate in the Dictionary of Law
consisting of Judicial Definitions and Explanations of Words, Phrases and Maxims

Latin certificatus, assured, made certain. A writing giving assurance that a thing has or has not been done, that an act has or has not been performed, that a fact exists or does not exist. To “certify” is to testify to in writing: to make known or establish as a fact. The word is not essential to a “certificate”; it is enough that the law calls a statement a certificate. State v. Schwin, 65 Wis. 213 (1886): Webster’s Dictionary.
