Corporate securities issued and outstanding representing the interest of stockholders in their role as owners, in effect, their entitlement to whatever is left over after all creditors have been paid off in full. Sometimes, of course, the line betwen this ownership of the residuum of the corporation and an ownership of “mere” debt is a fine one; preferred stock in AT&T is both more secure and less residual than many bonds.
