Brother-in-law Alternative Definition
The brother of a wife, or the husband of a sister. There.is no relationship, in the former case, between the husband and the brotherin-law, nor in the latter, between the brother and the husband of the sister; there is only affinity between them. See Vaughan, 302, 329.

A term of variable usage, covering the brother of one”s wife, the husband of one”s sister, and also (though less commonly) the husband of one”s wife”s sister and (to a wife) the husband of her husband”s sister. “Sister-in-law” describes the same relationship, but with a female subject.
