The definition of Breach Of Pound in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:
Animals taken under a warrant of distraint were kept in a pound, i.e., an animal shelter. The owners were often tempted to break in and take their animals back, or at least, to spite the distrainor, to set them free. Giving into that understandable impulse constituted “breach of pound.”
