The definition of Bottom Land in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:
Land formed by the overflow and recession of a river, hence extremely rich for farming. If still in the flood plain of the river, however, such land is subject to repeated flooding unless protected by dams, levees, etc.
