What does Beneficiary mean in American Law?

The definition of Beneficiary in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:

One who is to or does benefit from some legal act or arrangement. Thus, e.g., the person for whom a trustee acts, the cestui que trust, is the beneficiary of the trust (see also Uniform Probate Code § 1-201). The person who is to receive life insurance payments on the death of the insured is the beneficiary of the policy; the person who is to receive a distribution from the estate of a decedent is the beneficiary thereof; etc. The beneficiary of a letter of credit is anyone who under its terms is entitled to draw or demand payment. One who is entitled to the benefit of a contract or of an estate held by another. The word, though a little remote from the original meaning of the expression “cestui que trust”, is more appropriate for one who is a trustee or fide-commisary. 1 Story, Eq. 12 ed.§ 321, note. See Trust, Cestul, etc.

Definition of Beneficiary provided by the Uniform Probate Code:

As it relates to a trust beneficiary, includes a person who has any present or future interest, vested or contingent, and also includes the owner of an interest by assignment or other transfer; as it relates to a charitable trust, includes any person entitled to enforce the trust; as it relates to a “beneficiary of a beneficiary designation,” refers to a beneficiary of an insurance or annuity policy, of an account with POD designation, of a security registered in beneficiary form (TOD), or of a pension, profit-sharing, retirement, or similar 9 benefit plan, or other nonprobate transfer at death; and, as it relates to a “beneficiary designated in a governing instrument,” includes a grantee of a deed, a devisee, a trust beneficiary, a beneficiary of a beneficiary designation, a donee, appointee, or taker in default of a power of appointment, and a person in whose favor a power of attorney or a power held in any individual, fiduciary, or representative capacity is exercised.
