Basic Patent
What does Basic Patent mean in American Law?
The definition of Basic Patent in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:
Also called “basis patent” and “pioneer patent.” The patent on an invention which becomes the foundation of a product, process or even industry, and with respect to which improvement patents are issued. The precise coverage of the term is imprecise, but Alexander Bell”s telephone patent, and the original xerography patent, are clear examples of basic patents.
