What does Apprehension mean in American Law?

The definition of Apprehension in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:

The state of having apprehended. Apprehension can be used almost as a synonym for arrest, e.g., “His apprehension at the border ended the manhunt.” When used to describe a mental state, “apprehension,” unlike “apprehend,” gives off a clear connotation that that which is known is worrisome or frightening, as in “He was filled with a strong apprehension that the deal was not going to go through.”
