The definition of Alternate in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:

To alternate ( ) is to choose first from one group of things or options, then from another, then from the first, etc., e.g., “It is ordered that the police department alternate in hiring between white and non-white applicants until all available positions are filled.”
