Meaning of Aestimatio capitis
(Lat. the value of a head). The price to be paid for taking the life of a human being. King Athelstan declared, in an assembly held at Exeter, that mulcts were to be paid per aestimatio capitis. For a king’s head (or life), 30,000 thuringae; for an archbishop’s or prince’s, 15,000; for a priest’s or thane’s, 2,000. Leg. Hen. I.
