The definition of Adulterine bastard in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:
The child of a married woman by a man other than her husband. As “adultery” has come to include sexual relations by a married man with a woman not his wife, whether she is married or not, the term “adulterine bastard” has sometimes come to include a child born to an unmarried woman by a married man. This makes little difference as no legal consequences presently seem to attach to adulterine bastardy that do not attach to plain old bastardy. See adultery; bastard.
