What does Absorb mean in American Law?

The definition of Absorb in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:

To sop up, or draw into itself. In some uses, the implication is that an absorbing person is the gainer, e.g., “Over the years he absorbed all of her wealth.” But it is also possible to use the word to signify the taking onto oneself a cost or burden, e.g., “OK, you pay the postage and I’ll absorb the tax.”
